Easter Services

Every year, Christ Church holds special services leading up to and on Easter Sunday.  Our purpose is to have a season of thorough contemplation and full celebration of the central event of the Christian faith: the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Below are service times and brief explanations of our services.

Maundy Thursday Service: April 18, 6pm

The term "Maundy" derives from the Latin word mandatum, the first word in the Latin translation of John 13:34: "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another."  In this service, we remember Jesus' last meal with His disciples, "the night when He was betrayed" setting in motion His arrest and eventual crucifixion.

Good Friday Service: April 19, 6pm

Good Friday is the day the Church traditionally remembers the day of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, the event in which he bore our sins on the cross, enduring God's wrath for sin which we deserved.  It is called "good" for that very reason, that our sinless Savior took our place, bearing the penalty due to us so that we might be reconciled to our holy God.  As Paul puts it so succinctly in II Cor. 5:21: "God made Him who knew no sin to become sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God."

Easter Sunday: April 21, 10:00am

Easter Sunday is the day the Church celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ.  It is this singular event - the conquest of the our final enemy, death itself - that defines the Christian faith. So central is this, that the Apostle Paul asserts: "...if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain."  But our testimony and reason for worship is this: "...in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead.

So we gather to celebrate, testify to, and enjoy that which is "of first importance": "...that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures."  Come and celebrate God's grace to us in Jesus Christ!
